Opportunity of a Lifetime
Posted by MoneyWise CorporateBy Varlin Law; President and Co-Founder
Helen Keller once said, “Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experiences of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, vision cleared, ambition inspired and success achieved.” I’ve learned that success or failure can be influenced by how we act or react to challenges put in front of us. Some people call them challenges. Helen Keller liked to call them opportunities. All of us are divinely designed to reach our full potential and to feel the joy of accomplishment along the way. Sometimes it’s a simple matter of viewing our challenges in a different light, and turning them into opportunities.
What seems like only a short while ago, I was faced with my biggest “challenge” to date. I was diagnosed with leukemia. As you can imagine, many questions raced through my mind as the reality of my condition sunk in. Questions such as, “How could this happen to someone who eats healthy and avoids anything harmful?” “What will become of my wife and children?” “How will they meet financial obligations?” “What is their future?” “Would the world go on without me?” “Did I leave a positive mark for my fellow beings?”
My road to recovery was long and treacherous. I remember one painful night, while lying alone on a hospital bed, I made a promise. If I could make it out of there alive, I was going to do everything I could to prevent the hell I was then facing from impacting others the way it had me and my family. Being financially fit was a must, and good health imperative. I would live each day to its fullest. I would try to find balance. I would not sweat the small stuff. I would make the world a better place to live. I would try to meet my potential and help others achieve the same. I would follow the sentiments of Ralph Waldo Emerson: “It is one of the most beautiful compensations of this life that no man can sincerely try to help another without helping himself.” This was a critical moment of truth for me. I knew that if I didn’t see this challenge differently – see that there was a brighter future which I was now more prepared than ever to meet – that I would have missed the opportunity of a lifetime.
Since then, I have been amazed with the many other opportunities that have fortuitously come my way. Especially MoneyWise. MoneyWise was developed to help me deliver on that promise made several years ago on that hospital bed.
